Healthy Living Week
Exminster based organisation, Westbank, are hosting a Healthy Living week during the October half term. The event which will run from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th October has activities for all ages and interests.
The week has been developed in partnership with a number of organisations including Devon PCT, Teignbridge District Council, Dartmoor National Park, Active Devon, New Leaf, Sure Start, Natural England, Organic Arts and the St Sidwell’s Centre.
There are a range of activities for children and families including environmental play, under 5’s healthy eating workshop, cycle rides, baby massage and a full program of fun activities provided by the LOFAS holiday club for 4-11 year olds. Teenagers aged 13-16 years can enjoy Body Combat and Street Dance Sessions.
For adults who want to try something new and get fit, there will be dance and exercise taster sessions such as Jive, Belly Dancing, Alexander Technique, Over 50’s flexibility, Walking groups, Tai chi and more! An intergenerational tea dance in Teignmouth will bring together young mums and older people to take part in some of the classic dances!
Devon PCT will be providing quit smoking advice at various venues throughout the week.
New Leaf will be running a healthy cookery demonstration on the Friday as well as having open days and horticultural demonstrations during the week.
Older people who visit the Westbank Day Centre will not miss out – they will be taking part in music for the brain, belly dancing demonstrations and arm chair keep fit!
Jacqui Cornish, Deputy Chief Executive of Westbank said, “The week promises to be full of interesting and varied activities. We are just trying to show people that having a healthy lifestyle can be fun. There are so many things going on, there really is something for everyone.”
Westbank is a community organisation which has been running for over 20 years.
It works with all ages and has a mission of ‘Providing Care and Promoting
Health’. Mary Nisbett, Chief Executive of the organisation believes that “By
working with partner agencies such as Devon PCT and offering people an opportunity
to address their health needs in an informal setting we can really start to
make a difference to the health of local people”.
There will be a Health Fair on Tuesday 23rd October from 10am-4pm, open to
the public, when people can find out about lots of health issues such as
smoking, prostate cancer, healthy hearts, advice and information as well
as having health checks such as blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI and Cholesterol
Testing.
